The City of San Diego’s Mayor Jerry Sanders and Disability Services Coordinator, Susan Madison, are scheduled to kick off the event. Theresa Radiez, from the Personnel Department, will discuss current job openings, as well as general strategies for pursuing a career at the City. The rest of the event will revolve around discussions between each mentee and their mentor for the day. This discussion time will include lunch for all mentees and mentors. Mentees will have the opportunity to talk about their career goals and ask their mentor questions. Questions will be given to the mentees at the event, but they are also encouraged to bring their own. Mentee applicants are advised to review the employee mentor roster carefully. In addition to their current positions, mentors at this event can speak from experience in a variety of other areas.

Assistant Deputy Chief, Office Of Ethics & Integrity
In her role as Assistant Deputy Chief Ethics and Integrity, She coordinates, monitors and directs a variety of ethics programs, including ethics training and the employee ethics hotline. Before joining the City, she held the position of Media Relations Supervisor for San Diego City Schools, serving as the first point of contact for international, national and local media. As media relations supervisor, she responded to media requests and proactively pitched media to gain positive coverage of school and district initiatives. Additionally, she worked extensively with schools and departments to shape communications strategies in order to publicize positive events and programs and to neutralize negative situations. She also spent several years working for the Walt Disney Company. During her tenure as Senior Public Affairs Representative at the Disneyland Resort, she created integrated communications plans, identifying opportunities and implementing strategies to communicate with employees, media, community leaders, and government officials. Prior to joining Disney, she served as a Communications Specialist in the Communications Department of San Diego City Schools. Her responsibilities included leading internal communications and planning special events for the Board of Education. A graduate of Claremont McKenna College (with Bachelor’s Degrees in Government and Spanish), She holds a Masters Degree in Latin American Studies from San Diego State University

Associate Engineer Civil, Engineering & Capital Projects
The Associate Engineer Civil began work with the City as a student going to San Diego State in 1977. His full time work with the City started as an Engineering Trainee with Water Operations. In 1982, he promoted to Principal Engineering Aide with Water Utilities. He promoted to Jr. Engineer-Civil and then on to Associate Engineer-Civil in 1990. His work experience includes water operations, water & sewer design, CADD coordinator for Transportation & Drainage Design and he is currently doing construction management for Water & Sewer projects as Supervising Engineer with Field Engineering.

Associate Management Analyst, Office Of Ethics & Integrity/Disability Services
The Associate Management Analyst works under the Disability Services program. She has 20 years of administrative experience and been with The City of San Diego for the last nine years. Nine year ago, she was hired at Engineer and Capital projects department as a clerical assistant/receptionist. In 6 months, she moved up to an account clerk paying 100 construction, 200 consultant invoices a month. She promoted to a Senior Account clerk and then to an Administrative Aide I & II and Analyst all in the same department but different Division’s. Her attitude has been to work hard, volunteering services to other staff members and, as a result, she has made herself marketable.

Chief Of Staff, City Council District 2
Education: Bachelor of Science in Electronic Technology Management, Federal Communications Commission License, Aviation Electrician Journeyman, Masters Degree in Education. Work Experience: Michaels Arts & Crafts, US Navy, City of San Diego Communications Division. Interests: Football, Baseball, I ride a Harley Motorcycle, watching movies, swimming, traveling internationally.

Citywide Access Compliance Officer II, Office Of Ethics & Integrity/Disability Services
The Citywide Access Compliance Officer II's responsibilities include interpreting the requirements of ADA and Title 24, ensuring accessible access to all city buildings and oversaw the development of Petco Park access. His education includes an Associates degree in Carpentry from the community College district, classes in construction law at Cal Western School of Law and specification writing through UCSD. In 1974 he became an Apprentice Carpenter for the City of San Diego, promoting to Carpenter in 1975. He expanded his knowledge of construction by becoming a Locksmith in 1982, and a Construction Estimator in 1989. In 1992 he became an ADA Construction Estimator, and in 2004 became a Project Officer II, and in that capacity serving as Citywide Access Compliance Officer

Clerical Assistant II, Development Services/Neighborhood Code Compliance
Neighborhood Code Compliance division promotes and maintains a safe and desirable living and working environment; improve the quality of neighborhoods through education, enforcement, and respond to community concerns.

Deputy Director of Communications, General Services/Communications
The Deputy Director is responsible for the planning/design and overall operations of the City of San Diego’s wireless communications systems. These systems protect citizens and City employees by providing public safety agencies and emergency first responders with critical two-way voice radio, text paging, high-speed data, and video capability. He has over 20 years of Information Technology and Telecommunications experience in the Petroleum Industry, Gas & Electric Utilities and Healthcare. He has an engineering degree from Texas A&M University and a MBA from National University.

Disability Services Coordinator, Office Of Ethics & Integrity/Disability Services
The Disability Services Coordinator with the City of San Diego oversees ADA compliance on all programs, services and activities on behalf of the city. Prior to becoming the Disability Services Coordinator, she was a consultant specializing in training, facilitation, organizational development and leadership, coordinated a coalition and managed a mentoring program.

Economic Research Coordinator, City Planning & Community Investment
The Economic Research Coordinator works for Land Use and Economic Development. She was the Outstanding Student in the State of California in Public Administration and graduated Sum Cum Laude with her bachelor's degree and awarded a Masters Degree, also in Public Administration. During her career, she has developed expertise in demographic analysis, economic and statistical analysis, and management of information systems, econometrics, revenue projections, land use, building and zoning codes, as well as hazardous materials regulations that impact high technology industries. Her new position as Research Coordinator provides an opportunity for her to analyze community and economic indicators that can be used for policy and targeted community economic development.

Senior Management Analyst, General Services/Communications
Her educational background includes a Certificate in Carpentry from the San Diego Community Colleges, Certification as Journeyman Carpenter under State Apprenticeship, B.A. Degree in Economics from U.C.S.D., where she was a founding member of the Disabled Students Union, and a Juris Doctor degree in Law. Before coming to the City, she tutored students with special needs in all subjects at grade levels K-12 for the San Diego Unified School District. She was first hired on at the City of San Diego as a Groundskeeper, and then became a Carpenter Apprentice. After completion of the 4-year apprenticeship, she became a Carpenter. Her past positions for the City also include Program Administrator for the Parking Citations Program, but now she performs duties as the coordinator for yard operations and information technology issues, and as a supervisor and budget analyst in the Communications Division. The City has opportunities in a great variety of fields, and she had the opportunity to explore a number of them.

Sr. Civil Engineer, Metropolitan Wastewater
The Civil Engineer has worked for Park and Recreation, as well as various water utility departments. Her responsibilities included project management for the construction of parks and the documentation of water treatment specifications. Now she oversees the work of private developers for the legal separation of land, so it can be sold as many individual lots. She volunteered to share her experience at DMD because one, she loves what she does, and second, she knows some of the pitfalls in overcoming obstacles. She has a form of dyslexia called directional dyslexia whereby she has difficulty learning how to drive to places. To compensate for her dyslexia, she often utilizes maps and even so, if it is an area she has not visited regularly, she gets lost easily. It also makes it difficult for her to learn how to spell words. In addition, she experienced discrimination in college from being one of three women out of one hundred students in the graduating class of engineers After college, trying to get hired was demeaning, and once she was employed, she encountered people who had issues with women in professional jobs.
