The Port of San Diego will provide an overview of their role in our city and discuss the wide range of career opportunities they offer. Mentees will board shuttles and tour various properties managed by the Port. After the tour, mentees will eat lunch with their employee mentors from participating departments. Mentees will have the opportunity to talk about their career goals and ask their mentor questions. Questions will be given to the mentees at the event, but they are also encouraged to bring their own.
Participating Employees\Departments
Engineering - Construction
The Engineering - Construction Department is responsible for all phases of a project from project identification through contract completion. The majority of these projects are in the Port's Capital Development, Capitalized Major Maintenance and Major maintenance program. The department conducts engineering studies and investigations using both in-house staff and consultants. Staff also provides estimating, scheduling surveying, and inspection services. Engineering has forty-eight permanent budgeted positins and is located on the sixth floor of the Port Administration building and the Administration Building Annex.
Financial Services
Financial Services performs Budget Administration, Financial Reporting and Analysis, and General Accounting functions, including Accounts Receivable and Payable, and Payroll.
General Services
General Services include operational support, preventive and recurring maintenance, new construction, contract administration, and administrative support. The Port’s infrastructure includes: the bay and bay front, beaches, piers, parks, buildings, three marine terminals, railroad, roads, parking lots, landscape, signage, art, tenant leases, utilities and fleet services. General Services has 121 employees comprised of various tradesmen, general labor, technical and administrative staff. General Services provides support from three locations (1400 Tidelands Ave – administration and shop, Shelter Island – boat maintenance and dive locker, and Administration Building basement – custodial office).
Human Resources
Human Resources is responsible for Recruitment and Retention, Compensation and Benefits Management, Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining, Performance Management, and Training. In addition, the HR Department includes the Port’s Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator function, which addresses accessibility to services, programs, and activities.
Marketing
The Marketing Department supports Real Estate, Maritime, Cruise, Environmental and Recreation. The Marketing Department is responsible for providing the following marketing services: cruise marketing, sales, promotional and public relations activities, marketing planning, campaign development, advertising, Fee for Service and Marketing Sponsorship Program administration, internal marketing consultation, community outreach and maintaining the corporate identity, print collateral, special event management and market research.
Procurement Services
Procurement Services Department is segmented into three sections; Procurement, Materiel Support, and Business Opportunities. The Procurement section is further segmented into two groups; Purchasing and Contracts. The Purchasing group is responsible for the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment. The Contracts group is responsible for the administration of professional service agreements and construction contracts. The Materiel Support section is responsible for the inspection and distribution of supplies, materials, equipment, inter-office mail and surplus property. The Business Opportunities section outreaches to small and disadvantaged businesses by developing programs and events to attract new companies to compete in bidding for Port purchases and contracts.
